Unit Converter
One converter for the units that actually come up: metres and feet, kilos and pounds, litres and gallons, square metres and acres, km/h and mph, megabytes and gibibytes, seconds and weeks. Pick a category, pick two units, read the answer.
How to use it
- Choose a category, such as length or weight.
- Enter the value and pick the unit it is in.
- Pick the unit you want and read the converted figure, or press swap to reverse.
Examples
- 1 mi → 1.609344 km, the exact legal definition.
- 180 lb → 81.6466 kg.
- 1 GiB → 1073.741824 MB, which is why a "1 GB" file looks smaller on some systems.
Questions people ask
Why is a gigabyte sometimes 1000 MB and sometimes 1024?
Because two conventions exist. Storage makers use decimal units where 1 GB is 1000 MB; operating systems often report binary units where the same space reads as 0.93 GiB. Both are listed here so you can convert between the two without guessing.
Are the conversion factors exact?
The imperial ones are. An inch is defined as exactly 25.4 mm and a pound as exactly 0.45359237 kg by international agreement, so those conversions are precise definitions rather than approximations.
