Discount Calculator
Shop signs like "30% off, plus an extra 20% at checkout" do not add up to 50%. The second cut applies to an already reduced price. This calculator applies both in the right order and tells you the real percentage you are getting.
How to use it
- Enter the original price on the tag.
- Enter the first discount percentage.
- Add the second discount if there is one, and read the final price and the true saving.
Examples
- 129.90 at 30% off → 90.93, saving 38.97.
- 30% then a further 20% → 72.74, an effective 44% off, not 50%.
- Working backwards: a 60 item now sold at 45 has had a 25% cut.
Questions people ask
Why is 30% plus 20% not 50%?
Because the second discount is taken from the reduced price, not the original. Thirty per cent leaves 70 per cent of the price, and twenty per cent off that leaves 56 per cent, so you pay 56 and save 44 — six points less than the sign suggests.
Does the order of two discounts matter?
No. Multiplying by 0.7 then 0.8 gives the same result as 0.8 then 0.7. Order only matters when a fixed-amount voucher is involved, because a flat sum taken before a percentage is worth less than the same sum taken after it.
