- A 3 MB phone photo at 70% quality often lands near 400 KB with no visible loss.
- WebP at the same quality is usually 25 to 35 per cent smaller than JPEG.
- Below about 40% quality, blocky artefacts appear around edges and text.
Questions people ask
What quality setting should I pick?
Between 70 and 80 for photographs on the web. That range is where most viewers see no difference while the file shrinks dramatically. Screenshots and graphics with text need higher settings, or PNG instead.
Is the compression lossy?
Yes, for both JPEG and WebP. Detail thrown away cannot be recovered, and recompressing an already compressed file degrades it further. Always compress from your original, not from a copy that has been through this before.
