Temperature Converter

Three boxes, all live: type a temperature in any one and the other two follow. Useful for recipes written in the other system, weather reports abroad, oven settings and science homework, without remembering which way the formula runs.

How to use it

  1. Type into whichever box holds the number you already have.
  2. Read the other two, which update as you type.
  3. The line underneath flags physically impossible values below absolute zero.

Questions people ask

How do I convert in my head?

Double the Celsius value and add thirty for a rough Fahrenheit figure — 20 °C gives about 70 °F, close to the true 68. Going back, subtract thirty and halve. It is accurate enough for weather but not for cooking or medicine.

Why does Kelvin have no degree sign?

Because it is an absolute scale measured from the lowest possible temperature rather than from a reference point like freezing water. Its unit is the kelvin itself, so you write 298.15 K, never 298.15 °K.
