Tip Calculator

Splitting a bill at the table is the worst time to do mental arithmetic. Put in the total, the tip you want to leave and how many people are paying, and the calculator returns a clean per-person figure you can read out loud.

How to use it

  1. Enter the bill total, before tip.
  2. Set the tip percentage and how many people are splitting.
  3. Tick rounding if you want whole notes and coins, then read the amount each.

Questions people ask

Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?

Custom varies, and the difference is small. Tipping on the pre-tax amount is the stricter convention in places with high sales tax; tipping on the total is simpler and slightly more generous. Enter whichever figure matches the practice where you are.

Is tipping expected everywhere?

No. In much of the United States it is effectively part of the wage, in many European and Latin American countries a service charge is already on the bill, and in parts of Asia tipping can be unusual. Check locally before assuming a percentage.
